NASCAR 2008 Racing Season Begins with a Shootout
NASCAR is full of changes this year, with the Nextel Cup now the Sprint Cup and the Busch Series now the Nationwide Series. The 2008 NASCAR racing season officially began Saturday, February 9, in Daytona, Florida, with the Budweiser Shootout. Fans of Dale Earnhardt, Jr., are eager to see just what this season will bring for Dale, with his new number, new sponsors, new colors, and new teammates within the Hendrick Motorsports family. They were thrilled with his domination of the race and his win to break a long dry streak. Popular NASCAR Drivers Dale Earnhardt, Jr. has, perhaps, the most recognized name currently involved in the sport of racing. Although much of his popularity is attributed to the success of his late father, Dale Earnhardt, Sr., Earnhardt Jr. has more than made a name for himself. With 17 career wins at the end of the 2007 race season, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. is the NASCAR driver whom most fans have their eyes on. And with his win last Saturday, the season is promising for him. Known for his good looks and charm, especially with female fans, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. is most well known as the driver of the number 8 Budweiser machine; however, that all changes in 2008. Due to a team change, Junior will now be the driver of the number 88, with main sponsors of Mountain Dew Amp and the National Guard. Jeff Gordon is another popular NASCAR driver whose name is widely recognized. Jeff Gordon blew onto the racing circuit in the 1990s and saw success almost immediately. He is the driver of the number 24 DuPont and Pepsi machine, also for the ever-successful Hendrick Motorsports. With six championship wins at the end of the 2007 season, Jeff Gordon shows no sign of stopping, in terms of achieving the ultimate level of success. Jimmie Johnson is well known and successful NASCAR driver who is a part of the Hendrick Motorsports team. Jimmie Johnson is the holder of the 2006 and 2007 NASCAR championships. As with many other NASCAR drivers, Johnson got his start with racing on an amateur level at a young age. His choice of vehicle was motorcycles, which according to the NASCAR website, he started racing at the age of four! Mark Martin, although older than many of today's most popular NASCAR drivers, still has a large fan base, especially among those who have followed the sport since the early 1990s. At the end of the 2007 season, Mark Martin has a total 35 career wins. Perhaps most well known for his days behind the wheel of the Valvoline machine, Martin will spend 2008 driving for Team D.E.I. Kasey Kahne is an up and coming NASCAR driver who is gaining the attention of fans. In 2004, Kahne raced in all three NASCAR series, including NASCAR, Busch, and the Craftsman Truck Series. With Dale Earnhardt, Jr. changing teams, Kasey Kahne and his 9 car have acquired the sponsorship of Budweiser, which is a move that is sure to increase his exposure, as well as his fan base. Additional NASCAR drivers include Greg Biffle, Kurt Busch, Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, Bobby Labonte, Tony Stewart, and moving from Formula One racing, Juan Pablo Montoya, just to name a few. If you would like to learn more about these drivers, you can review driver profiles and stats on the NASCAR website. For a good review of the 2007 season, see the articles referenced below. |
