Host a "Baby Games" Baby Shower

Babies are so much fun. And a "baby games" shower is also fun since moms-to-be, godparents, grandparents, and other invitees to the baby shower get to play childish games again, such as Sing It, Baby!, Measuring up Mommy, Here's Looking at You, Kid!, Don't Say Baby, Baby Truth or Dare, The Seventh Gift, and Dig Out the Pins. These baby games are a great way to let the guests mingle and get to know one another.

How do we play these "baby games"? Here is the run-down.

• The game Don't Say Baby is precisely that! Guest must not say "baby" during the entire duration of the baby game shower, or until the hostess indicates the end of the game. When guests arrive, give each one a diaper pin. When someone hears a guest say the word "baby", she may take that guest's pin. The person with the most diaper pins at the end of the shower or when time is called wins a prize. The hostess is exempt because she is announcing the names of the various games to come.

• How big has mommy become? Measuring Up Mommy gives the guests the freedom to measure mommy's size. Have a couple of toilet tissues rolls ready and ask each participant to estimate the measurement of mommy's girth by tearing the toilet tissue to their guess size. Then each one wraps their length of tissue around the new mommy's tummy. The guest whose "measuring tissue" is closest to mommy's tummy at the largest point wins the prize!

• Remember how you looked when you were a baby? This game takes you down memory lane. Before the party itself, request that all the guests bring the cutest baby picture of themselves. Upon their arrival, take each baby picture and assign each one a number. For Here's Lookin' At You, Kid!, lay all the baby pictures out on a table. Give each participant paper and pen and ask them to identify as many baby pictures as they can. The guest with the highest number of correct guesses is the big winner.

• This baby game is for those who love baby trivia. Play Baby Truth or Dare by preparing a list of baby trivia, some correct and others purposely written incorrectly. During the baby game shower, present one trivia item and ask if the baby fact is either true or false. Those who guess correctly get a prize while those who don't will be dared to perform in front of everyone else. Continue down your prepared list as the shower progresses.

• We all know that the single lady who catches the bride's wedding bouquet is said to become the next bride. In The Seventh Gift, it is not so much a baby game but more of a fable that says that the giver of the seventh gift unwrapped will be the next expecting mother. However, avoid "planting" the seventh gift. Don't mention The Seventh Gift, but watch to see who did give the seventh gift unwrapped, then share the tradition. (If the "seventh giver" is one who is not likely to become pregnant - like Grandmother, for example - the woman to her right "inherits" the tag.) Have something handy to present to the potential next new mom, like a pacifier on a pretty ribbon necklace.

Dig Out the Pins is the baby game that tests the agility of the guests as they fish out the highest number of diaper pins from a large bowl filled with uncooked rice and diaper pins. A fish bowl would be good because of the small mouth, or, perhaps, a large cookie jar. Experiment beforehand to see what time limit might be good in light of the number of guests you will have. Count the pins removed at the end of each guest's turn, then replace them and stir the bowl to mix them up well again. The participant who fished out the most pins takes home the prize.

Call time on Don't Say 'Baby' now, because the next game requires your guests to do so.

• Save this one for last if you play Don't Say 'Baby'. In Sing It, Baby!, the guests form a circle. They can sit or stand. Then, each guest must sing a line or two from a song that has the word "baby" in it. When the first game player has finished, the person on her right has ten seconds to sing another "baby" song. "Baby" songs cannot be repeated, thus, participants who repeat a song or cannot think of a "baby" song get booted out of the game. The last person singing in this baby game wins the prize!
